Hiking Challenge Information

Hiking Level 1: Mount Arab Trail

2.0 Miles 750' elevation gain.  Average of 2-3 hours to complete

~25-30 minutes from camp

Trailhead / parking

  • Mount Arab Road, Piercefield / Tupper Lake area
  • Large marked lot (parking on one side of road, trailhead opposite)
  • Usually one of the easiest lots for a group convoy

What you’ll experience

Moderately steep trail through woods to a fire tower with big views: Tupper Lake, High Peaks to the east, Raquette River valley, Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest, Mt Arab Lake / Eagle Crag Lake. Summer weekends often have a summit steward; interpretive brochure available at the trailhead.

Gear notes

  • Fine for sneakers only if dry — boots still preferred
  • Tower stairs can be windy; hold kids’ hands
  • Bug spray in blackfly / early summer season

Hiking Level 2: Ampersand Mountain Trail

5.4 Miles. 1780' feet elevation gain. Average of 4-6 hours to complete.

~20 minutes  from camp

Trailhead / parking

  • NY Route 3 between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake
  • Small lot that often fills early on nice days
  • Trail starts across a 55 mph highway — marshal the crossing for groups
  • Overflow often ends up on the roadside shoulder — be careful and legal

What you’ll experience

Gentle-to-rolling start, boardwalks / wet sections, then a steep rocky climb. Remains of the old fire observer’s cabin en route. Summit is open rock with huge views: Middle Saranac, canoe country, Seward Range across the way, High Peaks beyond.

Gear notes

  • Boots with real tread (slabs when wet)
  • Poles optional; many stash them for the upper scramble
  • Extra water — limited reliable water on the climb

Hiking Level 3: Giant Mountain via Ridge Trail

5.9 Miles. 3,000' elevation gain. Average of 6-8 hours to complete.

~1 Hour from the camp

Trailhead / parking

  • Zander Scott / Ridge Trail trailhead on Rt 73 opposite / near Chapel Pond
  • Use Chapel Pond parking areas — do not park illegally on Rt 73
  • No AMR reservation

What you’ll experience

Climbs almost from the car. Lookout over Chapel Pond, Giant’s Washbowl, then long stretches of open rock on the ridge with constant views. Junction with Roaring Brook Trail higher up; continue to the open summit with huge High Peaks / valley views.

Gear notes

  • Boots with excellent grip; poles helpful on descent
  • Lots of water — exposed and steep

Hiking Level 4: Mount Marcy via Van Hoevenberg Trail

14.8 Miles, 3,166' elevation gain. Average of 8-10 hours to complete.

~1 hr from camp

Trailhead / parking

  • Adirondack Loj / Heart Lake Trailhead (managed by the Adirondack Mountain Club). A daily parking fee is mandatory ($15–$25 depending on membership status).
  • No parking or hiking permit reservations are required for day hiking.
  • Parking lot fills fast.  Predawn arrival is recommended.

What you’ll experience

Rolling forested hills → Marcy Dam (scenic backcountry junction with mountain views) → a steady, grueling climb up a boulder-strewn, rocky riverbed trail corridor → Indian Falls lookout → a steep, fully exposed final push up the massive granite summit dome. You will enter a fragile, endangered alpine vegetation zone and achieve unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views from the highest point in the state (5,344 feet).

Important Information

  • Split to ≤15
  • Headlamps required
  • The upper mountain is entirely exposed to extreme weather, severe wind chills, and fast-moving cloud systems—bring windproof layers and extra food.

Hiking Level 5: The Seward Range (Seward, Donaldson, Emmons, Seymour)--Same day

22 Miles, 6,500' elevation gain. Average of 12-14 hours to complete.

~30 minutes from camp

Trailhead / parking

What you’ll experience

Blueberry Foot Trail → Ward Brook → herd paths. Mud. Slow travel. Seymour often done as the separate punch (slide section, steep). Main Seward ridge is unmarked but worn. Summits are mostly wooded; Donaldson / Seymour have the better limited views. Expect to be slower than your normal pace.

Gear

  • Headlamps + spare batteries
  • Mud gaiters / expect wet feet
  • Water filter / treatment
  • Map + GPX offline; herd paths braid
  • Emergency bivy / group first aid
  • No cotton; warm layer for slow summit waits
